Chicago is not a coastal city, and somehow that hasn't stopped it from becoming one of the best oyster towns in the country during happy hour. Somewhere between a raw bar trying to move end-of-day inventory and a bartender who just wants bodies in seats before 6 p.m., this city built an entire ecosystem of $1 and $2 shells — and it stretches from steakhouse lounges on Rush Street to brewpubs on Milwaukee Avenue. Nobody's pretending it's Cape Cod. But at these prices, nobody's complaining either.
Here's where to find real oyster deals across Chicago right now — actual prices, actual hours, pulled straight from each spot's current happy hour menu.
The Dollar (and Two-Dollar) Oyster Club
If you're optimizing purely for shells-per-dollar, start here. Port Union in Wicker Park, chef Rodolfo Cuadros's spot that took over the old Bloom Plant Based Kitchen space this spring, runs $1 oysters with $11 cocktails Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. — and yes, they also do Martini Wednesdays separately if you want to make a whole night of it.
Over in Lincoln Park, Briny Swine Smokehouse & Oyster Bar does $1 oysters daily from 4 to 6 p.m. alongside $10 cocktails and craft beer specials — it's a Carolina-style BBQ joint that also happens to run a serious oyster program, with live music some nights and a patio that gets loud in the best way. The Franklin Room in River North, a whiskey-first bar with a genuinely deep bottle list, keeps $1 oysters going daily from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Roscoe Village's Volo Wine Bar also lands at $1 oysters Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., stacked next to $2 limoncello fizz shots and a $5 small-batch wine pour — a solid pregame before the heated backyard patio fills up. And BiXi Beer, the Asian-inspired brewpub on Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square, runs $2 oysters practically every day of the week (Sunday through Friday, 3 to 5 p.m.) next to $10 house cocktails and $6 drafts — one of the more forgiving happy hour windows in the city if your schedule is unpredictable.
Steakhouse Hours Worth Dressing Up For
Chicago's steakhouses treat happy hour as a loss leader to get you in the door, and the oyster pricing reflects it. Mastro's Steakhouse in River North runs its daily "Social Hour" from 4 to 6 p.m. with oysters on the half shell at $2 each, Oysters Rockefeller at $3, and $10 signature martinis under the glow of live piano — genuinely one of the better deals in a room that isn't cheap on the regular menu.
The Capital Grille in Streeterville runs "Capital Hours" in the lounge Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 p.m., with oysters casino on the $9–$17 lounge plates menu and $10 cocktails. Just west in the West Loop, BLVD Steakhouse — Joe Flamm's Old Hollywood-styled room on Lake Street — drops oysters to $1.50 each Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (weekends 2 to 4:30) alongside half-priced martinis and wine bottles.
Gold Coast's Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House, the clubby seafood-and-steak sister to Gibsons, keeps it simple: half-priced oysters and half-priced wine bottles, Sunday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. And in the West Loop, Boka Restaurant Group's Swift & Sons runs a daily "Whiskey Hour" from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with $2 rotating East Coast oysters next to $10 Boulevardiers, Manhattans and Old Fashioneds — order the Whiskey Hour Oysters with an Old Fashioned and call it a day.
Fulton Market's Oyster Crawl
There's enough density in Fulton Market to do a proper crawl without ever leaving a six-block radius. Start at The Publican, Paul Kahan's beer-hall-inspired institution on Fulton Market, which runs $2 raw oysters Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. next to $7 Cicerone-selected drafts and a $12 burger. A few doors down, Trivoli Tavern — the chophouse-meets-speakeasy on Gin Alley — does $7.99 oysters (two pieces) Monday through Friday, 4 to 5 p.m., alongside $9 Old Fashioneds made with Wild Turkey rye.
Bar La Rue, the all-season pergola bar with the patinaed zinc counter, runs $2 chilled oysters Sunday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Friday until 5:30) next to $9 wine pours and "Bougie Chicken Nuggets" — yes, that's really what they're called on the menu. Just south in West Loop proper, The Press Room, the basement-level wine bar on Washington, does $2 fresh oysters Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., or splurge on a dozen oysters plus a bottle of sparkling wine for $45. And over on Dearborn in River North, Hawksmoor Chicago — the London import with the cocktail pedigree — runs $2 oysters daily from 4 to 6 p.m. next to a $25 steak-and-fries deal that's arguably the best value on the block.
Neighborhood and Riverfront Favorites
Not every good oyster hour is downtown. Bar Parisette, the French bistro and wine bar in Logan Square, runs $2 East Coast oysters all evening Monday and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday — pair them with the $8 house wine or a $14 frozen Last Word. In Wrigleyville, Swift Tavern does $2 chef's-choice daily oysters Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. (the deal pauses on Cubs home game days, worth checking before you go). Ukrainian Village's Queen Mary runs a dedicated Raw Bar Happy Hour curated by local shellfish specialists Motorshucker, Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. and Monday 5 to 7 p.m. — pricing isn't posted publicly, but it's worth the ask.
Down on the riverwalk, NAIA — the new River North restaurant that opened this June right on the water — runs a first-come, first-served bar happy hour Monday through Friday, 4 to 5:30 p.m., with oysters at $2 each and cocktails at $11. And in Streeterville, Monarch & Lion keeps its happy hour running daily from 3 to 5 p.m. with $2 Blue Point oysters, $2 wings, and a $20 burger-beer-and-a-shot combo that covers the whole table.
A Few Notes Before You Go
Nearly every deal above is bar-seating-only or lounge-only — table service usually doesn't qualify, so get there early if you want a stool. Windows also tend to run short (60 to 90 minutes is typical), and a few of these — Swift Tavern, Port Union, Bar Parisette — skip certain days entirely, so double-check before you build a whole evening around one stop. If you're chaining a few of these together, the West Loop and Fulton Market cluster is the most walkable; for more on that neighborhood's broader happy hour scene, check out our West Loop guide and our River North guide, and our full neighborhood-by-neighborhood roundup covers the rest of the city.
