Best Happy Hours in Pilsen, Chicago

Pilsen's happy hour scene runs on $3.75 tacos, 50%-off cocktails, and a cocktail bar hidden in Thalia Hall's basement — here are the eight spots worth building a night around.

Pilsen doesn't do happy hour the way the rest of Chicago does. There's no bottle service, no view tax, no line out front — it's $3.75 tacos chalked on a board, a cocktail bar buried in Thalia Hall's basement that most people never find, and a brewpub pouring its own beer at half off before the sun sets. Almost everything worth knowing about sits within a few blocks of 18th Street, which means a real Pilsen happy hour crawl doesn't require an Uber — just a plan.

The Mexican Restaurants Anchoring 18th Street

Three spots within a half-mile of each other have quietly built the neighborhood's best weekday drink specials, and all three lean hard into Pilsen's Mexican roots.

La Luna runs the most generous happy hour in the neighborhood, full stop. Tuesdays and Fridays bring $3.75 tacos, $5 tequila or mezcal shots, $10 palomas ($25 for the pitcher), and a $10 frozen strawberry daiquiri — the drink regulars order without looking at the menu. Wednesday swaps in a $10 Luna Rocks margarita with $12 mussels, and Thursday's $15 margarita flight (lime, watermelon, mango) is reason enough to build a Thursday around it. Hours run 4–6pm Tuesday through Friday.

Señoritas Cantina keeps things simpler: Monday through Friday, 3–6pm, it's $10 red sangria, an $8.95 daily rotating cocktail special, and half off appetizers, with a $22 sangria pitcher on Saturdays. The patio and the wall of TVs make it the pick when you want a drink deal with a game on in the background.

La Mejikana stretches its happy hour across the whole early evening — daily, 4–6pm, for discounted margaritas, beer, and wine — before turning into a full DJ-and-dancing night on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm to 2am. Order the margaritas; they're the reason people keep coming back.

Patio Season and the Daily Grind

Pilsen Yards has the best outdoor setup in the neighborhood — a sprawling, year-round patio paired with a Latin street food menu and vinyl DJ sets. Wednesday through Sunday, 3pm until close, it's 50% off draft cocktails and draft beer, rotating mezcal and tequila specials, and half off mussels on Wednesdays. Stick to the tacos, ceviches, and carne asada, and if you're feeling it, ask about The Alderman, the hidden 16-seat cocktail bar tucked inside.

Oso & The Bull runs a no-nonsense daily happy hour — 4–6pm, every day it's open — with 50% off cocktails across the whole menu, $4 Modelos, discounted draft beer, and half off appetizers like wings and shareable plates. One catch: it's closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan the week around it.

Where the Night Gets Weird: Cocktails and a Jukebox Dive

Punch House is the one out-of-towners never stumble onto — a subterranean cocktail bar inside Thalia Hall's basement, exposed brick, rotating DJs, the works. Sunday through Friday until 7pm, $5 house cocktails make it one of the cheapest serious cocktail happy hours anywhere in the city. Order the house-made punches and don't rush it.

The Green Room Tap is the honest dive across the street from Thalia Hall — exposed brick, a customer-run jukebox, indie and alt rock on rotation, and none of the performance. Sunday through Friday, 5–7pm, it's 50% off select draft beer and a $6 Montucky-plus-shot combo that's become the neighborhood's unofficial budget special. If you've read our dive bar guide, this is exactly the kind of place that belongs on it.

The One Brewpub Worth Building a Night Around

Alulu Brewpub brews every beer it serves upstairs, small-batch, and pairs it with a chef-driven American-Filipino menu out of an open kitchen. Monday through Friday, 3–5pm, happy hour knocks down prices on the house brews and craft cocktails alike, plus the beer cheese curds — and Wednesday's burger-and-beer combo is the best deal in the neighborhood for the money. It's also Yelp's #1 rated happy hour spot in Pilsen, for what that's worth.

Pilsen's happy hour map is compact enough to walk end to end, which is most of the appeal — tacos on 18th Street, a cocktail at Thalia Hall, a nightcap at Alulu, no driving required. For the rest of the city broken down block by block, our guide to Chicago happy hours by neighborhood is the place to start, and if you want the ground rules — what time happy hour legally has to end, how tipping works on discounted drinks — our happy hour etiquette guide covers it.
